Overview

The convertible top on the Porsche 911 Carrera (996: 1999–2005, 997: 2005–2012) is hydraulically actuated. Rather than using the traditional cable-and-pulley approach, the car uses a set of pressurized cylinders to both open and close the top. Over time, the system can leak or fail, causing the convertible top to get stuck in either the up or down position.

System Operation

Hydraulic Actuators

The basic operation of the system boils down to the use of two hydraulic actuators, mounted inside each rear interior panel. Each actuator is fed by the main system pump. The actuators are mechanically linked to the convertible top frame — when the actuators expand, the top raises.

Fluid System

If the system is low on fluid, it can operate loudly and cause the top to stop working. Sometimes simply adding fluid to the system can get it working again. The fluid in the reservoir can also go bad (especially if there are leaks or contaminants), causing the system to work harder.

Service Position Procedure

Begin by moving the convertible top to the service position — where the front edge of the top is about 12–15 inches from the top edge of the windshield. This lets you keep the body flap open and gain access to the pump.

Once in service position: - Locate the guide cable connections under the rear window flap, attached with two ball joints (these keep the rear window flap down during opening/closing) - Pop both cables off the ball joints and fold the rear window flap up over the top - Pry out the four black plastic tabs holding the upper carpeting to the roll bar bulkhead - Stretch the carpeting over the black plastic blocks on either side and lift it out of the car

Front Latch Mechanism

The front latch at the windshield can also fail over time. This motor assembly extends a hook that latches the top against the windshield frame.

Manual Override

If the front-latch motor fails, you can still manually operate the latch: 1. Pry off the plastic cover at the front of the latch mechanism 2. Insert a 6mm hex key into the over-ride actuator 3. Turn counter-clockwise to close the latch (same tool used for emergency open/close of entire top) 4. Turn clockwise to open the latch

Emergency Manual Operation

If the convertible top cannot be opened using the switch, you can operate it manually. This procedure is a last resort — you may lose the reference points and need a Porsche factory computer (e.g., PS2) to reset them.

Step 1: Remove Rear Panel

  • Remove the rear panel behind the seats (held by two Phillips-head screws)
  • Fold rear seats down; panel is accessible through that area

Step 2: Open Body Flap Mechanism

With the panel removed, you can see: - The bleed valve used to actuate the convertible top frame (green arrow) - Manual motor override for the rear body flap (yellow arrow) - Actuation tool stored on the bulkhead (purple arrow)

Step 3: Operate Side Flaps

Use the tool to open the side flaps — rotate counter-clockwise until fully open.

Step 4: Open Body Flap & Pressure Relief

Insert the tool into the right port and turn counter-clockwise until the body flap is fully extended. The left port is a pressure relief valve — turn it counter-clockwise one revolution to bleed off system pressure.

Step 5: Manually Move the Top

  • If the top is already closed, simply push it back into the car
  • If the top is already open, grab it in the middle and pull it up and over until nearly closed
  • Use the front latch assembly over-ride port to close the top fully

Hydraulic Fluid Service

To add fluid to the system: 1. Remove the fill port plug (hex plug between hydraulic lines on pump) 2. Use a small syringe with plastic tubing to withdraw old fluid and add new fluid 3. Add hydraulic fluid until the level in the reservoir reaches the high mark

Hot Tip: Make sure the system has enough fluid inside! Low fluid is often the simplest cause of convertible top failure.
